The Natural History Museum, Slovenia, is a national cultural institution, funded by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia. It is the only national and governmental museum in authority for acquiring, conserving and exhibiting natural history collections.
The vision of the Natural History Museum, Slovenia, a public institution, is recognisability of its excellence in all the spheres of its activity, both at the Slovenian and European levels. In compliance with its vocation, the Museum takes care of its natural history collections, studies the natural history heritage and popularizes natural science. The basic condition for a development of the Slovenian central museum in the field of natural science is a suitable solution of the spatial problems in accordance with current laws, regulations and analyses, which is feasible primarily with the implementation of the long awaited new museum building.
Our work is based on provision of minimum conditions for the protection and keeping of our national cultural heritage or, in other words, on provision of basic spatial needs for the implementation of the Museum's vocation, including the setting up of a new permanent exhibition.
The Provincial Museum for Carniola (established in 1821), which is a direct antecedent of the Slovenian Museum of Natural History , was based predominantly on the NHCs; the oldest collections date back to the 17th century. In 1921, when the Provincial museum was renamed into the National Museum, the NHCs were organized as the Natural History Department but gained formal independency in 1944. Despite this, the Natural History Museum, Slovenia, remained in the old building of the Provincial museum (open to public in 1888), where it is still now.
In the Decision on establishing (Official Gazette of RS, no. 60/2003, Official Gazette of RS, no. 11/2009), the Republic of Slovenia aligns the operation of the public organization Slovenian Museum of Natural History with the provisions of the Law on the Implementation of Public interest in culture. The Slovenian Government deals with the founding rights and obligations of the Republic of Slovenia.
Slovenian Museum of Natural History preserves, explores and interacts tangible and intangible heritage of natural origin and biodiversity. The museum is based on zoological, botanical and geological collections, which are supplemented on the basis of the collection policy.
Collecting policy of the Slovenian Museum of Natural History as a state treasury of biodiversity and geological heritage of Slovenia committed to systematic collection of cultural heritage of natural origin mainly in the territory of Slovenia. In addition to the cultural heritage of natural origin from the territory of Slovenia, the museum also collects material which is extremely important due to technical, scientific, cultural or historical reasons.
Look into the future
The museum building on Prešernova Street houses two state museums: the Slovenian Museum of Natural History and the National Museum of Slovenia. The new construction could solve spatial problems of both, and on the new premises the Slovenian Museum of Natural History will carry out its mission even to a greater satisfaction of us all.
